What causes discoloration of the teeth?
Discoloration of your teeth can be caused by a multitude of factors. The most frequent causes for staining are cigarettes, cola, wine, tea, coffee, aging and medications. In addition, discoloration can also be associated with genetics. Some patients may have genetically brighter, whiter enamel than others. Some illnesses or high fevers can also cause discoloration of the teeth.
Your consultation
During your initial consultation, our dentist will discuss the condition of your teeth, your medical history, your expectations, your treatment options and the probable outcome of these options. You may be shown several before and after treatment photographs of patients having similar conditions, and you will receive an explanation of your treatment. Before and after photographs may be taken of your teeth and smile to document your results.
Dental veneers
Dental veneers can give you the smile you have dreamed of in a very short time. Dental veneers are little tooth sized pieces of porcelain or plastic that are placed over the front teeth to change or enhance their color and/or shape. They are very thin which makes them easier for our doctor to shape and affix them to your teeth. We find veneers to be perfect for covering discoloration, enlarging teeth that are too small, smoothing chipped and pitted teeth, or enhancing teeth with an otherwise odd appearance.
Dental veneers are very strong and are difficult to stain. They can last as long as fifteen years making them the perfect solution for a long-lasting perfect smile.
Are there different types of dental veneers?
There are three basic types of dental veneers. Composite veneers, porcelain veneers and a newer type of veneer called lumineer porcelain veneers.
Who are the best candidates for dental veneers?
The best candidates for dental veneers are patients with teeth that are chipped, crooked, discolored or uneven in size and/or shape. We use veneers to correct these irregularities and restore a more youthful and pleasing smile.
What is the dental veneer procedure like?
Porcelain dental veneers are a two-visit procedure. Each visit lasts from 1 - 1 1/2 hours. During your initial visit, you may want to try veneers with temporary cement. This will enable you to observe your "new teeth" in natural as well as indoor lighting. Then we will prepare your teeth for your veneers by removing a very small amount of enamel to make room for the new veneers. A mold will be made of your teeth. This will be used to create your veneers.
While your new veneers are being produced you will wear temporary veneers. During that time, please let us know of any changes or adjustments you think should be made.
Once your veneers are ready, they will be fitted to your teeth with glycerin or water so that you and your dentist can verify their fit, size and color. Once in agreement, your teeth will be cleaned with chemicals to ensure a proper bond. Dental glue is placed on your tooth and the veneer is positioned. Then a special light beam is used to cure/harden the glue. Once the veneer is affixed to the tooth the color cannot be changed.
Lumineer porcelain veneers are also a two-visit procedure. However, they do not require tooth preparation or the use of temporary veneers.
How will I feel after my veneers are added to my teeth?
Following preparation for your veneer procedure you may experience some minor sensitivity. You may find that "f" words sound a little different when you speak. This can be corrected in a follow-up visit to our office.
