TMJ

TMJ is a disorder that causes pain and tenderness in the joint (called the temporomandibular joint) that allows you to talk, yawn, and chew. It is located where your lower jawbone meets your skull and on each side of your head, right in front of your ears.

Our doctor performs TMJ treatment to alleviate discomfort and pain for patients in our region.

What causes TMJ?

Arthritis, muscle fatigue from grinding your teeth, stress that causes teeth grinding, or jaw injury are some of the different causes. Other causes for TMJ include that the disk erodes or moves out of its proper alignment. In many cases, the cause of TMJ is not able to be clearly determined.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

  • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
  • Tenderness or pain of the jaw, especially when you open your mouth wide

  • Limited ability to open the mouth very wide

  • Jaws that “lock” in either an open or closed position

  • Discomfort and/or difficulty chewing

  • Aching in or around the ear area

  • Facial pain

  • Headache

  • Uncomfortable and/or an uneven bite

  • Clicking or popping sound when you open your mouth

  • Grating sensation when you chew

Should I see a doctor if I have the symptoms of TMJ?

If you can’t open or close your mouth fully, or if your tenderness and pain are persistent, you should contact our doctor to discuss potential causes and treatment.

How does my doctor treat TMJ?

Nonsurgical treatments and self-managed care alleviate the discomfort and pain for most TMJ disorders. This may include a bite guard to help keep you from nightly grinding. You’ll be encouraged to minimize use of your jaw by eating softer foods and/or smaller-sized pieces. For severe TMJ disorders, our doctor performs dental or surgical interventions.
