Sealants

Tooth decay can permanently damage your teeth. Dental sealants help protect your teeth from decay and the expense, time and discomfort associated with the treatments of decay.

Our doctor performs dental sealant treatments for patients in our region to help protect their teeth from tooth decay.

How does a sealant prevent tooth decay?

The sealant protects your teeth from the bacteria that cause tooth decay. The plastic material bonds to the chewing surfaces of your teeth and serves as a barrier to protect your tooth enamel from acids and plaque. Because decay happens most often in your back teeth, sealants are usually applied to the molars and pre-molars. Dental sealants are especially beneficial to back teeth because they are more vulnerable to tooth decay and more difficult to reach. Proper dental care including brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing and regular dental checkups are still needed even with sealants.

What are the benefits of dental sealants?

The main benefit of dental sealants is that they help prevent tooth decay and thus the need for dental fillings.

What is the sealant application procedure like?

Our doctor performs your sealant application first by cleaning the teeth to be sealed. An acid solution is applied to help the adherence of the sealant, and then the sealant is “painted” onto your tooth where it will bond and then harden. In some cases, a curing light will be used to help harden the sealant. The application process is quick and simple.

Will I see or feel my sealant?

Sealants are typically not seen when you talk or smile; however in some instances they may be seen up close. Sealants are very thin, yet you may feel them with your tongue. This however is rarely bothersome.

How long does my sealant last?

Usually sealants last for several years. Our doctor will check your sealant each time you visit and if necessary your sealant may be reapplied.
