If chipped, cracked and irregularly shaped teeth have marred your smile, our doctor performs dental contouring or tooth reshaping for patients in our region, and it may be just what you need to restore your smile.
What is tooth contouring?
Tooth contouring or reshaping is just one of the modern techniques available in our practice. It is a conservative way to improve your teeth and your smile. Dental contouring, in conjunction with bonding or veneers, can correct cracked, chipped, crooked or overlapping teeth in just one visit to our office. In some cases, dental contouring can even substitute for braces.
The procedure
Tooth contouring is performed in our office; usually without any anesthetic. Prior to the procedure, your dentist may take x-rays of your teeth to evaluate the size of the pulp on each tooth. Your teeth will be marked to guide the sculpting process. During the procedure your dentist can change the length or shape of your teeth. Your dentist will gently fill cracked teeth, smooth out chips and remove just enough enamel from your tooth to achieve a more desirable smile.
Combined procedures
Since
Tooth contouring is limited to minor changes, it is often combined with veneers and/or bonding to provide a smile that others only dream of.
Dental veneers are little tooth sized pieces of porcelain or plastic that are placed over the front teeth to change or enhance their color and/or shape. They are very thin, which makes them easy for your dentist to shape and affix them to your teeth. We find veneers to be perfect for covering discoloration, enlarging teeth that are too small, smoothing chipped and pitted teeth, or enhancing teeth with an otherwise odd appearance.
Tooth bonding is a procedure during which your dentist uses a variety of composite resins for structural purposes to restore your perfect smile. Composite resins enable your dentist to reshape teeth, fill in the gaps, and restore chipped, broken and discolored teeth.
Your consultation
During your initial consultation, your dentist will discuss your particular condition, your expectations, and the probable outcome of your treatment. You may be shown several before and after treatment photographs of patients having similar conditions, and you will receive an explanation of your treatment. Before and after photos may be taken of the area to be treated to document your results.
Who are the best candidates for tooth contouring?
The best candidates for tooth contouring have chipped, cracked or irregularly shaped teeth.
What’s it like after I have a contouring procedure?
After our doctor performs your contouring and bonding procedure, it is not uncommon for your teeth to be a little sensitive to extreme temperatures. This may last for a few weeks. Some patients say their new teeth make them feel more confident.
Tooth contouring and bonding can change the shape and size of your teeth. It can make your teeth seem less crowded, fix cracks, and fill pits and groves in your teeth. Just a little contouring can make a big difference in the way others see your smile; and how often.
